How to Make and Keep Your New Resolutions

by Marla Sloane, Ph.D.

New Year resolutions are almost always about self-improvement. Quitting smoking, losing weight, getting more exercise, etc. You have the best intentions, but can you keep your commitment and make it work?

Of course you can!

Here are some tips to keep your new year resolutions:

1. Be Realistic. If you want to lose weight, don't expect to lose fifty pounds in one week. You have to work at it and give yourself ample time. Stick to your resolutions until you achieve them.

2. Stick With One. It is much easier to keep a resolution if you stick to one at a time. Trying to keep too many commitments can be frustrating, and you will want to give up quickly. One issue at a time is best for making your goal become a reality.

3. Have a Support Group. Having a support group can be very helpful in keeping your resolution. Talking things out with someone you can trust is very helpful and motivating. A buddy system is a healthy way to keep you on track.

4. Get Help. Doing major work on yourself may require the help of professionals. Alcoholics Anonymous, Weight Watchers, Therapists, etc. Don't be afraid to get help from good experts.

5. Start Small and Work Up to Bigger Goals. If you have a large resolution in mind that will take a lot of work, start small. For example, if you want to lose fifty pounds, start with losing twenty-five pounds and once you achieved that, have a new resolution for another twenty-five pounds.

6. Keep the End in Mind. Visualize yourself already achieving your goal. Visualization is a powerful took in manifesting your goals. If you see it in your mind's eye, you can achieve it!

7. Reward Yourself. Once you have achieved a goal or met your own expectation, reward yourself and give yourself a pat on the back. This not only builds self-esteem, but also gives you encouragement to keep going
